Taking the Photo at Home

Five minutes of setup saves a rejected application.

  • Stand in front of a plain, light-coloured wall
  • Keep about a foot between you and the wall so no shadow falls behind you
  • Face a window for soft, even light on both sides of your face
  • Have someone take the photo from 4–5 feet away at eye level — arm's-length selfies distort your face
  • Remove glasses, caps and earphones
  • Wear a dark or coloured top so you stand out from the white background
  • Tie hair back from your face so your eyebrows and face outline are visible
  • Take several shots and pick the sharpest

Watch out

Shadows on your face or behind your head are the most common reason Indian passport photos are rejected.

Turning a Normal Photo into an Indian Passport Photo

If you already have a good photo, it can usually be refined to meet the ICAO passport photo standards. Here's what usually changes:

  • Crop: to an exact square 35x45 mm.
  • Face Position: centered, filling most of the frame.
  • Background: use glossy photo paper and print at 100% scale, 300 DPI.
  • Resolution: 300 DPI – a blurry photo cannot be fixed, so start sharp
